ESL Raiders Skating Party
Last week some of our Raiders in the ESL program tried ice skating for the very first time, and some are now pros after a couple of years living in Canada. As you can see from the photos, they all had a blast!

No, it's just the Grade 10 Fashion class dressed in hip 80's fashions for a "Teen Beat" photo shoot. (But are you sure that's not the lead singer from "Wham!"?)

PCVS Stairwell Singers Impress
Seems our own Kate Macdonald and Janelle Blanchard are making a splash with their new video, recorded in the stairwell at PCVS. The song is a cover of Neko Case's "Star Witness." Miss Case has reportedly heard the song and was impressed , tweeting "Wow. That just made me bawl my eyes out. What beautiful singers. I'm not worthy... Holy god."

Sharpen those razors gentlemen...
This is your last chance to see these Marvelous Moustaches before they're gone forever... or at least until next Movember!
You can still make donations in support of MOvember. Visit room 206 (coop) and drop some coin in the can with the golfball on it near Ms. Cameron's desk. (FYI a golfball represents the size of a healthy prostate in case you did not know). Or you donate online at the official PCVS team site mobro.co/pcvsfurever.

PCVS Action Against Climate Change
On Friday, September 23rd, PCVS students and staff expressed their concern about climate change. The event was part of an international day of action organized by the international climate action NGO “350.org”, and as such was one of many similar actions around the world. The theme of this year’s international action is “Moving Planet” – which recognizes the importance of moving our transportation habits away from fossil fuels.  At PCVS, students and staff formed large human replicas of a bicycle and skateboard in front of the school.  They also created a large “350” because leading climate scientists agree that we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 392 parts per million to below 350 ppm if we want to avoid catastrophic impacts. This number is very important as it gives government policy creators a clear goal to work towards!

Our New Friend, Beatrice, Then and Now
Guest of honour for the Human Chain, PCVS Grad Beatrice Lumbar (nee Price), graduated from PCVS in 1932. Thanks to the wonders of YEARBOOKS we have found a photo of Beatrice from the good ol' days. Here she is with her Commercial III class. If you wish to have your own yearbook to hand on to your grandchildren in 80 years, see Ms. Cameron in the Coop Office with just $45. A pretty good deal for a priceless memory.

Gulu Walk 2010
On November 6 and 7 students from PCVS participated in the 6th annual GULU walk. Thirty students walked from Lock 25 near Lakefield to PCVS on Saturday and spend the night sleeping on the floor at the school. Early the next morning (6 am!) fourteen students walked back to Lock 25. The GULU walk is done to symbolically represent the challenge faced by thousands of Ugandan children who walked to safe centers such as Gulu every night (up to 12km each way!) to avoid being forced into fighting by the rebel Lord's Resistance Army. Students also watched the video "Uganda Rising", discussed the issues raised by the challenging video, and how to distribute the $650 they raised in the event. More info about others doing similar walks can be found at www.guluwalk.com.  Though there are more than 70 walks in cities around the world, it appears that PCVS's walk is the only one that incorporates a sleep over and walk back.

Knights of the Round Table Visit PCVS
Taking a brief hiatus from their quest for the Holy Grail, four members of the Round Table stopped at PCVS. Asked about their mission they said, "We dine well here in Camelot, we eat ham and jam and Spam a lot. / We're knights of the Round Table." Experts in the field suggest we leave the grail-shaped beacon off the top of the school next Halloween.
"We have to push the pram a lot!"

"Wear Purple" Day
PCVS Wears PurpleOn October 20 students at PCVS dressed in purple to highlight the plight of GLBT teens in our school. Students from Ms. Hughes drama class made a dramatic presentation and students posed for a purple photo shot on the school steps. The community press was on hand and students and staff were featured in news reports on Chex and the Peterborough This Week.
It is important that we can show pride in our school and for GLBT students to know that they have friends, allies, and support here.  Congratulations PCVS!

Students Supporting Seniors
"Leaf emissions on the lawns of Peterborough seniors have once again been reduced to acceptable levels thanks to the tireless efforts of Grade 10 students from PCVS," according to Al Cook, Head of Guidance at PCVS. In it's 30th year, the popular Students Supporting Seniors programme supported a number of local seniors this year thanks to a cheerful group of Grade 10s.

Top Notch Performances at ELL International Drama Night
Congratulations to Ms. Hughes, Ms. Cristall, M. Keshavjee, Taylor Northey and all of our ELL students for a wonderful performance Thursday night.  The shorts were thought provoking and explored many intense and challenging themes. It takes a lot of courage to perform in front of any audience, but even more in a foreign language to the home crowd. If you are talking to one of our ELL students, ask them about their contributions to the programme and congratulate them on a job well done!
(Thank you to Lida Arlouskaya for the photos.)

Pow Wow in the Park
Joseph (Niimki) OsawamickOn Tuesday, June 1, to honour his school, Grade 12 PCVS student Joseph (Nimkii) Osawamick invited a group of about 150 students to Confederation Park to educate them about aboriginal culture. The pow wow was Joesph's co-op goal for the semester.

Joseph's family and friends, including drummers "The Armour Hill Singers" and students from North Shore Public School, shared their culture with the students through dancing, drumming and singing. The students were also invited to join in the dancing.

To the left: Joseph (Nimkii) Osawamick dances at his powwow for PCVS.

Outdoor Ed Moose Sightings!
This semester's PLF 4C students had a very successful paddle trip to Algonquin Park.  In preparation, the students spent the weeks leading up to the trip at TASS gaining paddle experience.  Whether it be food and gear planning, environmental awareness or team building activities, the students were confident in demonstrating their abilities and became a strong and supportive team as a result. The group had a fantastic experience and were fortunate enough to have a couple of moose sightings!

Music Arts and Activism at PCVS
April 29, 2010, the main hall was filled with an exciting blend of music, art, food and social and environmental consciousness as PCVS held Music, Arts and Activism. The evening was a big success, raising $500 towards Mr. Douglas’ educational and environmental projects in Namibia thanks to the generosity of those who attended.

The evening was the work of African Connections, The PCVS Arts Council (SMAC), Switch, The PCVS Drummers, the SATB Choir, as well as numerous staff and students.

The Grade 9 Integrated Arts Visual Arts class auctioned their six abstract paintings raising $265 for the event. The paintings will be on display in the PCVS library all next week before they go to their new homes.

PCVS students have shown once again that PCVS is an engaged, caring community with a global outlook.

PCVS Students on "Victory in Europe" TourVE_Trip_thumb.jpg
A large group of PCVS students, staff, and parents went to Europe in May, 2010 for the 65th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe. Having toured Paris and visited Vimy, PCVS students then took part in a ceremony in Groesbeck, Netherlands. Three thousand students participated in the silent walk to the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial where over 2000 Canadians are buried.  It was an emotional experience for all, as the whole town stopped to watch the March. On May 5, students attended ceremonies marking the Dutch National Day of Remembrance.

Pancake Science?!

A couple of weeks ago, Ms. Armitage's science class was cooking pancakes. Apparently, she works them so hard, they get really hungry studying science... Actually, according to Ms. A. the students were trying to determine the "% Yield of the Pancake Reaction". It was a real lab and the students not only had to cook and eat the pancakes, but they had to prepare a lab report consisting of Purpose, Materials, Procedure, Observations (both qualitative and quantitative), Calculations of % Yield, and Sources of Error. Curriculum based and yummy too! Who said school can't be delicious??
