PCVS History
PCVS was founded in 1827 and built in 1898. Since then it has gone through many changes and renovations. In 1905, the cornerstone was put in place and in 1929, the additional section was added. This section includes the Upper Gym, Cafeteria and Library as well as most of the school as we know it today.
PCVS offers courses in a wide variety of areas. These departments include Business Studies, Family Studies, Languages, Science, Computer Studies, Geography, Mathematics, Technological Studies, Dramatic Arts, Guidance, Music, Visual Arts, English, History, Physical & Health Education and the Integrated Arts Program. PCVS students excel in all areas of study, from Calculus to Ceramics, from Physics to Photography.
Peterborough Collegiate consists of many regular classrooms as well as specialized rooms for certain classes. PCVS has four computer labs as well as a Resource Centre (library), a music room, two drama rooms and enough space for the sewing machines, video editing suites, art rooms and other special equipment for the various classes. The only thing PCVS does not have are enough parking spaces to accommodate all the teachers as well as the students who drive to school.
Principal's Message
Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School is unique. Our special place in the community is reflected in the school's 180 year history and the historic building itself, with its beautiful architecture, woodwork and marble staircases. The school's traditions include a commitment to academic excellence, outstanding teaching and responsible student leadership.
The intimate atmosphere which exists in the school is enhanced by our relatively small size. Our 975 students can benefit from individualized programs and personal attention from teachers.
While most P.C.V.S. students are registered in regular academic programs, approximately 300 students are enrolled in our Integrated Arts Program. Each year we select 75 students from across the County to enter our Grade 9 Integrated Arts class. The Arts program benefits the entire school since P.C.V.S. offers enrichment courses in visual art, drama, dance and music as well as specialized courses such as ceramics, photography, music theatre and computer illustration/video production.
The school is also well known for our high-tech communications technology programs, enriched physical education courses and a career counselling/co- operative education program. We also offer peer tutoring programs in reading and mathematics, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for students who are learning English.
Gifted and talented students can participate in a number of special P.C.V.S. programs such as mini courses at Trent University and Sir Sanford Fleming College, the Academic Olympics, and the Model United Nations course which culminates in a trip to the Hague. Over 100 P.C.V.S. students participate in these enrichment programs.
Aside from our fine academic programs, P.C.V.S. offers a full slate of extracurricular activities including an outstanding athletic program which produces top ranked basketball, volleyball, rowing, field hockey, rugby, and track teams. We also have outstanding drama and music departments. Our school choir, triple trio and jazz and concert bands have garnered many awards while our drama productions and annual musical are community highlights.
We are proud of our reputation for student achievement in academics, athletics and the arts, our long standing traditions, our intimate environment and the commitment and support from an active School Council.
