Who is eligible to attend?  
Students can register if they are of high school age and under 21 years old.

Who needs English as a Second Language instruction?
  • Students who do not speak English in their homes
  • New Immigrants
  • Refugees
  • Fee-paying International Students
  • Exchange Students
  • Some First Nations students from northern or Quebec communities
  • Francophone students from Quebec
  • Students from English speaking countries who need cultural, educational, or literacy support
What does the ESL program offer to secondary students?
        *Information is available in your first language

Academic Support
  • Language and numeric skill assessments
  • Course selection and planning for post-secondary studies
  • Ontario Ministry of Education courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Literacy Development (ELD)
  • Subject-based courses for English Language Learners (Such as Canadian History, Canadian Geography, Civics)
  • Extra time, alternative space and language support for subject-based courses and test writing
  • Tutoring and preparation for the mandatory Gr. 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)
Social and Cultural Support
  • International Students’ Centre Room 210
  • International Students’ Centre  room provides social and emotional support in a cross-cultural environment
  • Students have a place to gather with friends for lunch, to do school work, play games, or email family and friends
  • You can find out about activities, school clubs, and sports

Guidance and Career Support
  • Time-tabling assistance
  • Support for students’ families. Referrals to community services and other English language programs in the community
  • Help students find job and career information: apprenticeships, colleges, universities, and TOEFL tests
  • Emotional and psychological support is available for any problems students have in life or at school
Every year the students choose an International Students’ Representative for the Students’ Administrative Council (SAC) at P.C.V.S. This year our SAC representative is Weijia Zhou.

How to Register
Please call Peterborough Collegiate to make an appointment.
Contact:        Guidance Secretary, Lynn Johnston – 742-0425 ext. 207 or
ESL Guidance Counsellor, Ferne Cristall – 742-0425 ext 238, who will help with assessment and building a timetable.

International Students – Fee-Paying
Fee-paying International students must first contact the Board of Education to arrange Letters of Acceptance and to pay fees.

New Canadian Students with landed immigrant, permanent residence, refugee status or family work permits
Bring your documents to the school when you register. Also bring any school records you have from your previous schools/country.

Busing
When you arrive at the school to register, you can request bussing if you live more than 3.7 km. from the school. If you have special circumstances you can also request bussing.
